AAPSU demands CBSE branch office in state

ITANAGAR, Jun 10: All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) has appealed for setting up a branch office of Central Board of Secondary Examination (CBSE) in Arunachal Pradesh.

Absence of a CBSE office in the state is causing lots of hardship to the hundreds of poor students every year for minor problems like rechecking of examination results, obtaining lost certificates, mark sheets, correction of names etc., the apex students’ body of the state said in a memorandum to Education Minister.

The problem has grown manifold in the recent times due to increase in students population which necessitated the urgent setting up of the said CBSE branch office in the state immediately, the AAPSU memorandum said and appealed the Minister to look into the matter with utmost urgency.

The union also urged the education department to carry out extensive awareness programme to sensitize the students of the state on fake institutes which are not duly recognized by the government. Stay away from ENT quackery

Dear Editor,

As a doctor, I would like to offer an information and opinion on health fraud being practiced in the roadside near Rajiv Gandhi Stadium Naharlagun which is not at all safe and effective for the public. Some of the quacks, who claimed to be the Ayurvedic physicians, are performing dangerous procedure of cleaning the sinus diseases, ear wax etc. When I saw the procedure being performed, I was shocked to see that the instrument made of iron is attempted to puncture from the site in the nose to enter into the maxillary sinus which is few mm away from the danger area of the face.

The sinus wash procedure, which is being done only by ENT specialist in a proper OT set up in hospital with written consent from the patient, is being done by the quack in a roadside near the corner of the stadium wall where people urinate, without taking any antiseptic and aseptic measures. The procedure itself can lead to eye swelling, blindness and shock. The unsterilized instrument can easily induce the dangerous infection like tetanus and others which can easily spread to brain causing fatal meningitis. The single sharp pointed instrument is being used in every patient to clean the ear wax, without sterilization which can easily transmit hepatitis B and HIV in case of trauma while cleaning or in presence of any boil, discharge in the ear canal.

The claims they made of curing the sinus diseases is absolutely false and misleading to the innocent public and there is no validated scientific evidence. The procedure is high risk of causing potentially severe complications’ and irreversible damaged to sinus, ear and other structure of the face. Therefore, general public are warned to stay away from such quackery and concerned authorities are requested to check such health fraud for safety of public health .

Farmers of Apatani plateau need help

Dear Editor,

Last week, I visited Ziro. The plight of the people I saw there was pathetic. There was only one word in their mouth,- Aji Yado, Aji Yado which literally means diseased paddy plant (bacterial leaf blight disease). I also personally visited the paddy field and witnessed the paddy plants suffering from bacterial leaf blight disease including seedlings in the nursery bed. It is a matter of serious concern because such disease has never occurred in past in the Apatani Valley. This epidemic has been observed for the first time. Growth and development of paddy plants has been stunted due to said bacterial disease.

Most of the people residing in different villages of Ziro valley are dependent on agriculture for their livelihood and commercial purpose too. The paddy farming practice in Apatani plateau is annual because the climate of Ziro valley is favourable for one time farming practice in a year. So, if this outbreak of disease continues then there will be serious consequence leading to shortage of food in the rest period (non-farming seasons of the year).

In this situation, I think some control measures is urgently needed. In this regard my suggestion to farmers is that they cultivate fishes in natural bundh breeding till bacterial leaf blight disease is minimized and use some control measures for paddy plants like use of resistant varieties, healthy and disease free seed, bio-pesticides, etc. It may reduce the disease to some extent. I also request the concerned agriculture department, district administration and the local MLA to kindly extend possible help, initiate preventive and control measures at the earliest possible.

It is against RTE

Dear Editor,

This is in support of the news items “Federation condemns….” ( on June 9) regarding collection of fee from the students.   I too extremely agree with All Arunachal Pradesh Youngster United Federation’s condemnation because it is completely neglecting the RTE Act. The Constitution (86th Amendment) Act, 2002 has inserted a new Article 21A after Article 21 in the RTE. The new Article 21A deals with Right to Education    saying that “the State shall provide free and compulsory education to all children of the age 6 to 14 years  in such manner as the state may, by law, determine”. So, collection of  Rs.200 as school fees by the various government schools across the state are not a right step and against the spirit of RTE. I do hope that concern minister will look into the matter positively very soon.

Woes of retired Govt servants

Dear Editor,

I would like to highlight some basic problems faced by the retired Govt. employees. As per the High Court, Itanagar permanent bench judgment, the pension case of the retired persons should have to be settled within four months from the date of the retirement of incumbent. But it is very unfortunate that, after several months and years of retirement, the retired people are roaming  around and requesting the concerned department for clearing their pension papers.

Therefore, I request the concerned dealing assistants/babus who deal with pension related papers to clear-up the pension file, so that the  retired Govt servant can  get their pension papers cleared at the earliest. Don't forget, one day you will be in the same queue for pension.

Yours,

Phurpa Yonjhan

Help us to serve you better

Dear Editor,

I on behalf of the Arunachal Pradesh Doctors Association (APDA) would like to appeal to the general public to have patience when they bring their relatives to the Hospital for treatment. A Hospital is an establishment manned by well-trained professionals who are trained to deal with any category of illness and with a motto to serve the sick better. The doctors posted in these Hospitals are all Group - A Gazetted Officers of senior rank under the state health services. When their contemporaries in other departments are enjoying life in cozy rooms of official Bungalows and move around in officials cars, these officers often sleep in their personal cars at night just to discharge their duty as many Hospitals don’t even have proper duty rooms. Moreover, preventing a Government staff on duty in discharging his duty itself is punishable under IPC. Unnecessary quarrelling, abusing, and behaving in an unruly way (as witnessed in Arunachal State Hospital few days ago) only cause unnecessary hindrance to the working Health Care Professionals and is counterproductive for the patients.

Your cooperation and patience will only help these professionals serve you better.

Yours’

Dr. Mika Umpo,

President,

Arunachal Pradesh Doctors Association

The pathetic work ethic

Dear Editor,

This is written with a lot of anguish and frustration over the functioning of the SBI banks in Itanagar and Naharlagun. Patience is a virtue that seems alien to them. Worst of all is their impeccable talent of keeping things in the dark from the customers. This is regarding the closure of car loan that I had taken four years back. The SBI officials constantly deducted huge sum of money from my account on various pretext. It was not until my patience exploded in their office that they bothered to help.  The grievance is not only against their pathetic work ethic but also their arrogance. They need to learn a lesson or two on transparent accountability. Considering we live in a society where the majority is assumed to be ignorant especially of the apparently sophisticated nature of bank work, the officials seem to be under the impression that they have the upper hand. They refused to divulge me the details of those various alleged reasons on the basis of which they were deducting huge amounts from my account. They refused to even consider me eligible for understanding their allegedly sophisticated workings. On top of that, I am billed with several thousands to pay. All I can do now is channelize my anguish into productive writing as this.

Yours,

Aggrieved customer

Open letter to an MLA

Dear Editor,

Through the columns of your esteemed daily, I would like to write an open letter to our MLA Tako Dabi. Sir, I would like to highlight the problems and threat faced by the people of your area, particularly Nari sub-division. From all sides our lands are being rapidly encroached by the people from Assam. We often have to face mental and physical harassment by the people and police personnel from Assam, when we have to pass through Assam to reach Pasighat, Ruksin or even to Telam, Seren for official works, medical or any other emergency purposes as we do not have these basic facilities in our town.

As Nari is the headquarters of Nari-Koyu constituency, it should be your responsibility to provide basic facilities to the people. Please, complete the NEC road before it is damaged completely and reconstruct the Nari Dhobu bridge.  People are facing shortage of essential commodities as  there are no infrastructure for business activities.  Therefore, the market area should be developed with proper planning.

Yours,

Mr Ken

Poaching a major threat to wild animal

The poaching has become a major threat to survival of wild animals in  North Eastern states of India.  Our neighbouring state of Assam is still fighting against the poachers in order to preserve the one-horned rhinoceros.

On the other hand, our neighbouring country Nepal had celebrated 2011 as zero poaching year. Not a single rhino was killed in Nepal last year.

The wildlife experts feel that the milestone was achieved with the coordinated efforts of the Nepal Government, conservation partners, local communities and most importantly, security forces.

Nepal arrested a complete chain of criminals involved in poaching and trading of the one-horned rhinoceros in October last year.

The arrests was a significant achievement leading to the complete breakdown of a network of poachers and smugglers right from the grassroots to the international level.

Enthused with this achievement, the conservationists are contemplating to  make strategy to achieve the status of zero poaching of tigers as well.

It is time our country, particularly the North East states evolve proper strategy to eliminate the network of poachers before it is too late.
